Sisterhood by Indian artist Sonal Relekar-Ramnath, headed for the Moon

Sonal Relekar-Ramnath, an Indian artist, is overjoyed that her painting "Sisterhood" is being sent to the moon as part of The Peregrine Collection.

Her artwork will be part of an ensemble of artistic works by 1200 creative artists and one A.I., which will be a first for an Indian artist. These will be transported to the Moon in a time capsule onboard the Astrobotic Peregrine Lunar Lander, which is expected to launch this year.

"When I began painting 'Sisterhood,' I never dreamed it would go to the moon, " says Relekar-Ramnath.

This whole journey has been a miracle for me." The artist is based in Mumbai and holds a master's degree in fine arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Last year, 'Sisterhood' was included in the international exhibition 'Storytellers,' organized by Elaine Schmidt and held at Flinders Lane Gallery in Melbourne, Australia, in partnership with the Didi Menendez-led Poets and Artists Group. This catalog was written by poets and artists on the spacecraft 'Storytellers,' which is currently on its way to the Moon.

The Peregrine Collection

The Peregrine Collection is one of the most diverse collections of popular culture work constructed for launch into space, and it is considered to be the first-ever project to put women artists' work on the Moon.

About 1200 creative artists and one artificial intelligence are interested in the assembly of thousands of creative works, all of which are destined for the Moon.

The Collection features artists from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Australia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, and the Philippines.

Peralta and OSUN, an OpenAI-based computer programmed by Sri Lankan author and researcher Yudhanjaya Wijeratne, partnered on a collaborative human-AI work of poetry.

Two microSD cards, encased in DHL MoonBox capsules, hold the digitized artwork and literature archives. Astrobotic's Peregrine Lunar Lander will carry the payload via NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.

The mission will launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida in July 2021, and the lander will arrive on the Lacus Mortis area of the Moon, marking Earth's return to the lunar surface and the first mission carrying commercial payloads.
