Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, president and CEO of Feeding America claims that chronic poverty and food insecurity in the US can be eliminated. Up to 35 million of our fellow citizens are chronically poor. The pandemic has aggravated the issue to 42 million.
Feeding America's national network of 200 food banks delivered more than 6 billion meals in the last year. It will use the funds to support people of color. The federal government playing an important role in this. The new stimulus bill contained provisions to place more Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program aid food dollars in the pockets of low-income families.
MacKenzie Scott, who has vowed to give away the bulk of her Amazon fortune, to honor Feeding America's work. Feeding America will use the funds to support people of color, affected by food shortages and the pandemic.
How being Chronically Hungry affect?
Food deficiency is also the cause of severe chronic illnesses. It has physical effects and far-reaching consequences for a person's general well-being.
Impact of Hunger on Young People, other groups, and the Elderly?
Some people's brains never create fully when they are nutrition deprived as infants. When they get to elementary school, the deprivation has a significant impact on their learning and physical health. However, there is a stigma associated with it. Many children are subjected to lunch bullying, treated as an outcast if they know she receives a free or discounted lunch. Children and the elderly are treated more compassionately than working-class people. Those who work 2-3 jobs, their child lives in a food-insecure household.
I want to work and overcoming by accepting that it exists. There was one silver lining. The cloud of COVID brought this problem to light at a time when we couldn't ignore it.
Is there a shift in Public Perceptions of hunger in the US?
Throughout the pandemic, roughly 40% of the people have reached out for assistance. It is important to raise public awareness. And, once we've had the country's creative juices going, identified an issue, we can solve it.
Fundamental Problem
We produce more than enough food to feed the entire population of the US. We waste much more food than is needed.
Solution
The solution is to adjust with the system, such as making it more costly for a business to give away food rather than throw it away. Schools and restaurants can help. The USA is the largest food waste recovery organization involving billions of dollars.
Source of Rescued Food
We can work with grocers to avoid wastage of food, and we distribute it to those in need. We have partnerships with restaurant partners. Instead of wasting food that doesn't sell, we can pair it with people in need.
Help from Farmers
Agricultural waste is ploughed back into the ground because it is unsuitable for the American user, but it is perfectly edible.
Logistics
I know a lot of people, who know a lot about logistics, and Walmart is one of our many partners, and they constantly use their logistics expertise. I believe we will turn the face of chronic hunger in this country by the end of the decade with proven practices on how to achieve it.
Will this problem resolve by end of the decade?
I don't agree that leaving your job and working at a food bank is the solution. Everyone should find their unique way to contribute to this job. And there are multiple approaches we can imply. For start, they can begin by learning as much as they can about the state of hunger in America.
