Going Green - Oman Launch Third Generation Solar Energy Technology

Business & Finance Club Magazine - Industrial Sector - Oman (Muscat) -- Sheikh al Fadhl bin Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Oman Ministry of National Economy for Development Affairs today launched at Knowledge Oasis Muscat (KOM) the experimental  station for solar energy production. This marks that launch of the 3rd G for solar energy technology in the Sultanate.

Al Harthy hailed the efforts undertaken by Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (PEIE) to attract and transfer modern technologies. He also commended the good initative by the private sector represented by the experimental  plant for solar energy production.

In a statement to reporters , he added that the government considers the use of solar energy depending on the outcome of the current study on the suitable locations and the feasibility of setting up a solar energy based project that produce between 100 to 200 mega watt He hoped that the study would be completed by the second half of this year and taking the suitable decision towards it.

On his part, Mohammed bin Abdullah al-Mahrouqi , CEO of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water received last years 13 offers for experimental  projects in the different parts of the Sultanate. After assessment of the offers , two of the offers that meet the technical standards have been selected. Another four offers are still under study and research.

While delivering his opening speech , Mohammed bin Hamad al Maskari , Director General of KOM said that the major aims behind the setting up of this experimental station for solar energy production in KOM are to support and encourage scientific researches in solar energy and its applications and build national capacitates in the field of solar energy technologies.

He added that the project will provide the opportunity to study the elements of the Omani environment, how far they are fit to produce energy.

He added that the project will contribute to raising scientific awareness of the solar energy on the academic level and will create cooperation among the specialized establishments and companies that will transfer and develop the solar energy technologies in the Sultanate. It will also encourage entrepreneurs to utilize the project in the production of new applications.

After this Saleh bin Hilal al Khalili , CEO of the company taking part at the experimental plant for solar energy production made a presentation on the new technologies and compared it with the %2 technologies. He also made a live presentation about the energy generated from the plant (6 kilowatt ).

The launching ceremony was attended by Eng. Ahmed bin Hassan al Dheeb, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry for Commerce and Industry, Dr. Hilal bin Ali al Hinaie, Secretary General of the Scientific Research Council a number of directors general at the industrial estates, public and private officials.
