On Sunday, a top UN official hailed the pledge of the Group of Seven (G7) leading developed nations to quickly provide at least 870 million doses of COVID-19 vaccinations, enabling global access and working to end the pandemic's intense phase.

“Accessibility to COVID-19 vaccinations is the clearest road out of this epidemic for everyone —including children — and promises announced by G7 members...are an essential advance in this direction", said Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Creating on the acceleration of the G20 Global Health Summit and the Gavi COVAX AMC Summit, global leaders committed to a landmark agreement at the G7 Summit, which is currently occurring in Cornwall, United Kingdom, intending to deliver at least half towards the end of 2021. Secretary-General António Guterres had also stated that despite “unequal and very unfair” access to immunizations, “this is in the best interest of the world.”

The G-7 leaders also reiterated their assistance for the UN-led COVAX equitable vaccine distribution program, describing it as "the major avenue for giving vaccinations to the poorest nations."

In the meantime, the COVAX alliance applauded the G7's commitment, particularly their sustained support for large exports and voluntary licensing and non-profit worldwide manufacturing.

The partners hope to see “dosages flowing to countries” as quickly as possible.

COVAX will collaborate with the G7 and other nations which have ramped up to provide doses as quickly and equitably as feasible to assist resolve the short-term supply restrictions affecting the global response to COVID-19 and decrease the risk of future dangerous variations.

“We have hit a tragic milestone in this pandemic: there are now more COVID-19 deaths in 2021 than it was in all of last year,” Fore lamented. “Without immediate action, this damage will get worse.”

The senior UNICEF official stated when it comes to stopping the COVID-19 epidemic, “our best objectives and our best natures correspond.” He noted the necessity for a “ramp up” in both the volume and pace of supply. This problem won’t end until it's been resolved for everyone.”

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), stated that several nations are experiencing an increase in cases due to a lack of vaccinations.

“We are already in the marathon of our lives, but it is not a fair match, and most nations have just merely started,” he remarked.

While expressing gratitude for the generous announcements of vaccine contributions, he emphasized that "we need much more, and we need them sooner."

As many high-income nations explore life beyond vaccination, the future in low-income nations remains gloomy.

“We are greatly worried about the rises in South America, Asia, and Africa,” said UNICEF's executive director.

Furthermore, as the pandemic progresses, the virus evolves and develops new forms that might endanger both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

“Donating dosages now is good policy that speaks to our common best interests,” she added, stressing that, in addition to vaccination promises, “distribution and preparedness require precise timelines” for if they will be accessible, notably in countries with the limited healthcare system.
