Saudi Arabia supports Egypt and Sudan in upholding legitimate water rights

Saudi Arabia has offered Egypt and Sudan it is backing in protecting their legal water rights.

The Saudi Press Agency said on Tuesday that the Kingdom reaffirmed the significance of preserving water security for Egypt and Sudan, and the Arab world, and the African continent.

In the statement, Saudi Arabia supported Egypt's and Sudan's attempts to alleviate the problem, and also their desire for a settlement in sync with international law. The Kingdom additionally committed its support for international efforts to discover a permanent solution to avert the situation.

The Kingdom urged the international community to step up their efforts to find a direct technique to begin negotiations among the three countries (Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia) to finish the emergency in line. It will also be in their best interest including the interests of the Nile Basin countries and the future of the region's people.

Saudi Arabia's assistance to Egypt and Sudan comes as Ethiopia announced that it has started filling the reservoir behind the massive hydroelectric dam, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), for the second year in a row.

Egypt, enraged by Ethiopia's action, categorically rejected the offer, labeling it a danger to stability in the region. Egypt sees the dam as a serious environmental threat to the Nile water supply, on which it relies dominantly. Another downstream nation, Sudan, has voiced worry about the dam's stability and its influence on its dams and water stations.
