Planting 250,000 extra trees in three years signifies a quantum leap in coffee agriculture

As per the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA), the Kingdom has achieved a quantum jump in coffee tree cultivation by planting an extra 250,000 trees since 2017, to attain the record of 400,000 plants by the end of 2020.

As per the Kingdom, coffee projects are fostered through a variety of programs and activities, along with the formation of a research unit. As per the ministry's Twitter account, official figures for 2017 reveal that the number of coffee trees in the key growing regions of Jazan, Asir, and Al-Baha didn't even reach 150,000 trees.

Arabian coffee is mostly cultivated in the Al-Dayer Bani Malik region of Jazan and the Hada Mountainous region of Asir in the Kingdom. These areas are well-known for growing high-quality Khawlani coffee, which is highly regarded all over the world. During the yearly harvest season, which stretches from October to January, Khawlani coffee farmers in the mountainous governorates of the Jazan area continue to accumulate coffee beans and harvest their crops.

Khawlani coffee bean cultivation is regarded as a highly regarded occupation that represents the cultural character and tradition of the inhabitants of these mountainous areas.

As per the ministry, the number of coffee trees in the three areas increased by nearly 250,000 between 2018 and 2020, owing to the assistance of the administration of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman, and the introduction of numerous programs and projects.

The ministry highlighted that the Kingdom supports coffee projects through a multitude of programs and efforts, such as the effort to restore agricultural terraces including the use of rainwater collection techniques. The Kingdom entered into an agreement with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) that included coffee plantations as one of the fund's first projects in Saudi Arabia.

The project will commence with the planting of further 300,000 trees in the Coffee Development City in the Al-Baha region, followed by the establishment of the largest coffee exhibition in Saudi Arabia and the setting up of an integrated coffee factory that encompasses sorting, processing, roasting, and packaging.

The ministry stated that a coffee research unit, the first of its type, has been formed at the Agricultural Research Center in the Jazan area, after clearance for its growth because of Jazan's success stories in coffee production. The ministry also stated that this will continue to provide assistance to boost productivity in its agricultural regions.

“One of the most significant goals of the sustainable agricultural rural development program is to focus on improving coffee production and marketing it locally and overseas and also to pave the path for more investment opportunities in this field,” according to the ministry statement.
