Milkha Singh, widely recognized as the Flying Sikh, died on Friday night at the age of 91 after a lengthy struggle with coronavirus.

On Friday night, he died at PGIMER, a prominent hospital in the northern Indian city of Chandigarh, only five days after his wife Nirmal died.

On May 20, the 1958 Commonwealth Games winner and 1960 Rome Olympian screened positive for the virus and was hospitalized in a private hospital in Mohali on May 24.

Singh was discharged on May 30 before even being brought to PGIMER's coronavirus unit on June 3 owing to low oxygen levels.

The former Indian athlete tested negative earlier this week and was transferred to the medical ICU.

Golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, Milkha Singh's son, confirmed his father's death on Friday through Twitter.

"Today, the Milkha family's backbone was shattered. Above all, Mom taught us to be modest and good human beings. We may never be able to repay her for everything she has done for us and the unconditional love she showed us over and over again. Thank you, everybody, for your prayers and expressions of support "The tweet stated.

Prime Minister Modi also posted a Tweet to convey his heartfelt condolences on the demise of India's legendary athlete, writing: "We have lost a colossal sportsperson in the demise of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, who managed to capture the nation's creative abilities and retained a special place in the hearts of numerous Indians. His charismatic charm endeared him to millions. I'm devastated by his death."

"I have spoken with Shri Milkha Singh Ji only a few days ago. I had no idea that it will be our last conversation. His life experience will inspire several aspiring athletes. My deepest condolences to his family and many fans all through the world "The Indian prime minister further said.
