Masdar, a renewable energy corporation based in Abu Dhabi, is a bright torchbearer for sustainability and innovation. Since its founding 15 years ago, the firm was a significant player in the nation's economic diversification and climate action.

Masdar has done amazing environmentally friendly work in several nations. It established the first large-scale sustainable energy plant in Seychelles, consisting of eight wind turbines spread across two islands.

These have built Southeast Asia's largest floating solar PV power plant, the country's first of its type. Furthermore, it is constructing solar and wind projects in countries such as Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan.

This has elevated the importance of researching hydrogen as a clean energy source to a whole different level by committing to the development of a hydrogen demonstration in Masdar City.

Now it has struck a strategic agreement with the Republic of Iraq to construct solar photovoltaic (PV) projects with a minimum total capacity of two gigatonnes in the nation (GW).

The agreement was signed virtually by Majid A. Hantosh, Iraq's Minister of Electricity; Suha Al-Najar, President of Iraq's National Investment Commission; and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar.

The signing was witnessed by Iraqi Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul Jabbar Ismail, UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure Suhail Bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, and UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi.

Ismail remarked of the deal, "The Government aims to develop and strengthen national output of renewable energy." We would generate 2 GW of solar electricity using projects in central and southern Iraq under our arrangement with Masdar. Iraq is targeting for 20 to 25% of its energy to come from renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels, which equates to 10 to 12 GW.

“This agreement with Masdar, a global leader in sustainable energy, is a significant step forward in the growth of the clean energy investment industry and the use of solar energy in Iraq.”

“We are thankful to the Government of Iraq for presenting Masdar with the chance to contribute to the implementation of Iraq's renewable energy strategy,” Al Mazrouei stated. The UAE is committed to collaborating with Iraq in the development of renewable energy resources. This initiative also emphasizes the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors in identifying cost-effective solutions.

“Masdar has become a pioneer in establishing sustainable energy projects and is now engaged in even more than 30 countries worldwide, with a total amount of more than $20 billion and a production capacity surpassing 11 gigatonnes. “Masdar would use the experience it has acquired through these projects to assist Iraq on its path to sustainable energy,” he said.

“The UAE shares Iraq's resolve to diversify away from reliance on oil and gas and to expedite the transition to sustainable energy sources,” Al Ramahi added. We are honored to assist the Government of Iraq at this critical juncture through its clean energy journey, and we'll use our expertise to help the country attain a more sustainable future.”
