Armenia claims that Azerbaijan is encroaching on its territory

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan blamed Azerbaijani forces for entering the nation on Thursday, escalating tensions months after a violent confrontation over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Based on an official statement, Pashinyan informed a special meeting of his security council, "This is a disruptive infiltration."

He blamed Azerbaijan for attempting to "lay siege" to Lake Sev, which the two nations share, and said that the country's army replied to the "encroachment" with "proper tactical tactics."

The claims were dismissed as "controversial" by Baku, with the Foreign Ministry noting that "the border guards are seizing over places that belong to Azerbaijan in the Lachin and Kalbajar areas."

It went on to say that Azerbaijan "is dedicated to lowering tensions in the area and asks for steps in this regard."

French President Emmanuel Macron has demanded that Azerbaijani forces "retreat instantly."

France, together with the United States and Russia, co-chairs the Minsk Group, which strives to find a peaceful settlement to the disputes between the two nations over Nagorno-Karrabakh.

Washington is "closely monitoring" the scenario.

"We know dialogue between the parties is underway and encourage prudence in gently de-escalating the matter," stated State Department spokeswoman Ned Price on Twitter.

Furthermore, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had spoken by phone with his Azerbaijani colleague, Jeyhoun Baeramov, regarding "the worsening of the scenario."

According to a summary of the call from Moscow, the two ministers emphasized the "demand for rigorous implementation of the truce."

Dispute between the two nations has been brewing since the conclusion of a conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh in the 1990s.

Last year's flare-up was perhaps the most deadly in decades, with 5,000 people killed and tens of thousands uprooted during the 44-day battle.

It came to an end in November with a Russian-brokered truce that compelled Armenia to relinquish a major area to Azerbaijan, sparking calls for a big political revolution in Yerevan.
