G7 international and development ministers arrive in London at Lancaster House

Princess Tarfa

On Tuesday, foreign ministers from the G7 countries will meet personally for the first time in three years to address global problems including the COVID-19 pandemic and authoritarian regimes.

Global change, Iran, China, Ukraine, Russia, misinformation, and the rule of law are all on the schedule for the three-day summit that will be headed by the UK and conducted in London.

Myanmar would be the first country to be discussed. Britain said in a statement that it would ask other governments to "take further measures against the military junta" by widening restrictive measures and growing humanitarian relief.

Ministers would focus on the scenario in Libya, the current conflict in Syria, and the developments in Ethiopia, the Sahel, and the Western Balkans.

"The foreign ministers would also address Russia's continuing malign operation, along with the build-up of soldiers on the Ukrainian border, the detention of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, and the condition in Belarus," according to the UK statement.

France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US, the UK, and Canada are members of the G7, a multinational body comprised of a few of the world's leading advanced economies.

'Democratic ideals and an equal society,'

During one bilateral meeting on Monday, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and US State Secretary Anthony Blinken emphasized the group's "common ideals."

"What we've been attempting to do is to maintain the international rules-based framework that our countries have spent so much in for so many generations to the gain, I would say, not only of our peoples but also of people throughout the world," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said during a press conference on Monday.

Blinken urged G7 countries to protect "economic principles and free societies" in the face of Russian and Chinese challenges.

"I see a growing appetite and requirement for flexible groups of like-minded countries that hold the same ideals and want to defend the multilateral structure and I believe you will see it in the guests we took to the G7," Raab said.

Representatives from India, Australia, South Korea, South Africa, and the Chair and Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the European Union's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, will attend the conferences.

In a statement issued before the conference, German Foreign Minister Heiko Mass said that it was "extremely important" they met personally.

"Regrettably, the world hasn't stopped moving in the past three years. Many who wish to restructure the world order to represent very different philosophies have not paused for us. We cannot win the contest solely on the basis of our promises and must make better deals," he said, citing G7 decisions on global COVID-19 vaccine rollout and combating climate change.
