Princess Tarfa

According to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, Myanmar security forces killed 38 people on Sunday, 22 of them in Yangon's Hlaingtharyar district.

The death toll matches that of 3rd March, which apparently was recorded as the highest number of deaths.

After one of these deadliest days since the February 1 coup, Myanmar's junta imposed martial law in two heavily populated Yangon townships on Sunday.

The junta has repeatedly justified its power by claiming widespread electoral fraud in the November elections leading Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party to victory.

The large Hlaing Tharyar township in Yangon and the neighboring Shwepyitha township, will be under martial law, according to state-run media on Sunday. The improvised townships are the factory hubs to many garment factories.

An announcer on state run TV adds, the junta gives authority to Yangon regional commander administrative and judicial martial law to efficiently conduct defense to maintain tranquility by preserving the law.

Soldiers and Police are conducting crackdowns against demonstrators, by firing rubber bullets, deploying tear gas and live rounds to stop anti-coup protests.

Police and soldiers crashed protesters violently with sticks and knives hiding behind the barricades in Hlaing Tharyar Township. The UN employs an envoy for Myanmar denouncing; "bloodshed is continuing" on Sunday, after a number of demonstrators were killed in one of the country's deadliest days since the country's Feb. 1 coup.

Christine Schraner Burgener said, the international community, must unite for the people of Myanmar so that they can achieve their aspiration towards better democracy.
