The Royal Mint, the official manufacturer of UK coinage, introduced a new edition of collectible coins honoring the renowned British band The Who on Monday.
To commemorate the currency's release, The Who's co-founder and main vocalist, Roger Daltrey, paid a visit to The Royal Mint to strike one of the first coins, putting the band's stamp of approval upon new denomination and its design.
The collectible coin honoring The Who is the fourth in The Royal Mint's 'Music Legends' series, after coins honoring Queen, Elton John, and David Bowie.
The vibrant design of the coin incorporates some of the most recognizable symbols from the band's live and loud gigs, such as a union flag, Mod logo, and speaker-smashing Rickenbacker guitar.
The symbols on the coin combine to resemble a pinball table, a tribute to the band's most renowned productions, the song Pinball Wizard and the album Tommy.
Elements of the coin have been digitally printed using the most recent color printing technology to highlight the brilliant red, white, and blue of the band's insignia.
A few coins would include a special ‘shockwave' effect, emanating from the speaker, heightening the detail of the coin, using the most cutting-edge revolutionary technology and production processes.
The Mint's designers and crafters created this effect in commemoration of The Who's record-breaking loud concert – a milestone that stood for a decade.
"The Who" is a famous British band with an incredible musical legacy, so it felt natural to acknowledge them with an official UK coin," said Clare Maclennan, divisional director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint. "The Who" coin is the newest in our awe-inspiring Music Legends collection, which honors famous British performers with unique new designs. It was an honor to have Roger Daltrey visit the Mint and strike one of the first coins, and also meet the team of designers that produced this magnificent design.
“Our Music Legends series is attracting young generation of coin collectors, and we believe this creation will become a treasured piece of fan memorabilia."
"It's an honor to get a coin minted to recognize “The Who's” musical history," stated Roger Daltrey, co-founder and the lead vocalist of The Who. The design of the coin conveys the actual spirit of the band and what we stand for. It was an incredible experience to strike one of the very first pieces inside this collection and observe the variety of technology and procedures involved in the coin's creation."
"I am happy that the band's work is being honored by this magnificent collection of coins from The Royal Mint," stated Pete Townshend, lead guitarist of The Who.
The Who started with three schoolboys who shared a passion for music ranging from jazz and skiffle to rock and rhythm and blues.
The band was founded by John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, and Roger Daltrey, and was subsequently joined by Keith Moon.
