UK spends $1.4bn to reduce carbon emissions from industry

The UK says it would spend one billion pounds ($1.39 billion) to eliminate pollution from industry, with its "green movement" aimed at creating thousands of jobs and achieving climate targets. The UK has set a goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, boosting employment, and repairing the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Today's proposals would drastically reduce the number of carbon emissions, placing us on track to eradicate our contribution to climate change by 2050,” said Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng. These initiatives will help the country cut emissions from manufacturing by two-thirds in 15 years and build and support up to 80,000 jobs over the next 30 years. One of the most challenging aspects of the battle against climate change is reducing pollution from industry.

Industry is expected to convert 20 terawatt-hours of electricity from fossil fuels to low-carbon sources by 2030. Traditionally, ultra-high temperatures have been achieved by burning coal or gas. That must change now, and the government is banking on the production of hydrogen to help replace fossil fuels, in energy-intensive industries.

932 million pounds will be allocated to 429 projects across England to help reduce pollution from public buildings such as schools, hospitals by introducing low-carbon initiatives such as energy-saving insulation, low-carbon heating systems, solar panel construction, and efficient lighting.

To further decarbonize industry, another 171 million pounds will be allocated to nine projects in Scotland, South Wales, and the North West, the Humber, and Teesside in England initiating the use of cleaner fuels like hydrogen.

“The Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy would give a strong signal to the market by laying out how the government wants to implement decarbonization, while also increasing investor confidence,” said Kwarteng. Last year, Prime Minister Boris Johnson launched a "green revolution" to mobilize 12 billion pounds in government funds and generate 250,000 highly qualified green jobs by 2030. Johnson's government pledged on Tuesday to make climate change a top foreign policy priority.

The UK is under pressure to lead by example. Its plans to develop a new deep coal mine in northern England will have a bad impression on that goal. The mine in Cumbria would help the steel industry become greener by allowing steel plants to use coal mined locally rather than importing emissions.

There is a fear that the Mine will derail the UK's attempts to reach its net-zero emissions goal. Its approval will now be subject to a public inquiry.
