Prime Minister Imran Khan got a phone call from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Monday, inviting him to visit the country. Both leaders spoke about their countries' relations.
The crown prince asked about the prime minister's wellbeing and wished him a quick recovery. PM Khan also asked about the health of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who had recently undergone surgery.
“It gives me great pleasure to extend my best greetings and hope that Your Royal Highness is in good health and safe from the pandemic. I'd like to express my heartfelt condolences and best wishes to His Majesty King Salman Bin Abdulaziz, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. I am ecstatic to learn of Your Royal Highness's plans to initiate the "Saudi Green Initiative" and mobilize the area behind the broader "Green Middle East Initiative" to protect the environment and the earth”. The prime minister shared.
He praised the two initiatives, which included the planting of 10 billion trees in the kingdom and an additional 50 billion in the region as part of the Green Middle East Initiative, the extension of protected areas to 30%, the conservation of marine and coastal habitats, and the production of 50 percent of the kingdom's electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
Mr. Khan said Saudi leaders' visions were very similar to the government's "Clean and Green Pakistan" initiative, which was investing in nature-based solutions to resolve the country's climate change effects.
“Our ‘10 billion Tree Tsunami' project is underway across the country, following the successful planting of one billion trees from 2014 to 2018. By 2023, we intend to extend our protected areas by over 15% on land and 10% on the sea. These projects have shown that planting trees not only preserves the atmosphere and restores habitats to combat climate change, but also expands eco-tourism and creates thousands of green jobs for youth and local communities,” he added.
“We are also committed to moving our energy mix towards a clean and low carbon pathway,” Prime Minister Khan said. We are aiming for 60 percent renewable energy by 2030, in line with the kingdom's vision, which includes a significant expansion of solar, wind, and hydropower generation capacity in the region.
Pakistan values its cordial and brotherly ties with Saudi Arabia, and we would like to express our support for Your Royal Highness's excellent "green" initiatives. Although our two countries establish good cooperation on climate change issues at all multilateral forums. A constructive and structural bilateral engagement will help advance our common vision and open up mutually beneficial partnership opportunities. We'd also be pleased to share our organic methods, insights, and knowledge.
Prime Minister Khan says, “As the world has no choice but to tread this green path and establish a new development model for the twenty-first century. The challenge of climate change required greater international cooperation and a common aspiration for sustainable development. Your Royal Highness's contributions toward this transformation are greatly appreciated”.
The prime minister also expressed his warm wishes for the royal highness's health and happiness, as well as for Saudi Arabia's continued success and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Pakistan's High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Siddiqui, paid a visit to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and briefed him on bilateral relations. The prime minister told the high commissioner to keep working to improve bilateral ties. He sent his best wishes to Bangladesh's leaders and its citizens.
