Saudi Faces: Princess Tarfa bint Fahad AlSaud

Princess Tarfa

Like anyone else, I also have a story to tell. I used to ask my mother that how I was as a kid. “A sweet girl who always listened to what her parents had to say,” she would say. In her eyes, I was calm, and a safe kid. However, I recall a different story. A happy child, safe — but I was not obedient, and rarely quiet. Adventurous nature with inquisitiveness to explore. I always wanted to (and did) join the boys in their crazy plots and pranks, especially those involving bike rides with my older brother. The other side of me had an inner life, where I lived in my bubble. I had completed my first work of art, an abstract piece, by the sixth grade. The instructor was not pleased. I recall being annoyed with her for not understanding me. Funny though, since the beginning, I was an over thinker.

One of the defining moments in my life occurred when I gave birth to my first child. Since I married young, I had my first child when I was just 20 years old, at the start of my journey. We were going to learn, develop, and discover everything the world had to offer as a community.

Regrettably, the dream did not come true completely. Saud was diagnosed with leukemia when he was one, and I was pregnant for the second time with my beautiful daughter Nora. My young hero died at the age of 12 after years of fighting. My two other children, Nora and Yazeed, are my life and deep down I know they are my biggest fans and critics of my artwork. watching them grow and their ambition was a blessing for me. Once I was invited to speak at Alfaisal University in Riyadh, where Nora is studying, I gave a talk titled: “The Creative Soul and the Structured World". Looking at those young curious eyes, made me realize that how much I loved helping young people. My experience in grief has taught me a lot about human nature and the world and finding balance in life. As I was healing, I started exploring and diving more into art and loved what I found. I begin my study for my diploma in visual arts in my thirties. From there I began my professional career as an artist. Being a spiritual person I believe everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan for all of us. When I was young, I always wanted to study either of these two things: fine arts or psychology. So I did both and apart from being an artist, I am also a life coach. My definition of a perfect includes yoga, some family time, art, moments of self-awareness, and some deep meaningful conversation with people.
