Sharjah’s first-ever Emirati female car mechanic transforms passion into a profession

Princess Tarfa

Huda Al Matroushi is one of the few Emirati women who have entered the car repair industry, which has long been dominated by men in the Arab world. "I just like it," Matroushi says, clutching her oil-stained work glove. "Because I'm on top of my career, and it's my career, I feel like I'm a part of it: I'm proud of myself." Matroushi, 36, has been interested in cars since he was a child.

"I'm a nerd for automobiles, their styles, and their intricacies. I like driving race cars, luxurious cars, and even non-luxurious cars." She converted her hobby into a business and now owns and manages an auto repair shop in Sharjah, one of the seven emirates that comprise the UAE.

Matroushi's family had reservations about her seeking a career in auto maintenance, but she persuaded her father to take a chance with her.

"Dad, please believe me, and you will see what I would do, I said.  All right!' he exclaimed. The majority of my family is shocked because this venture, this company, is not easy and convenient for women." She said.

Mohammed Halawani, a male workforce at Matroushi, said it was surprising to see a woman in charge of the workshop at first.

"But after I entered and we began operating, and she'd tell me, 'disassemble this, assemble that,' it became clear that she has expertise." Matroushi hopes to expand her single garage into a large repair company or to open more garages in the UAE.

The UAE requires UAE-based businesses to have at least one woman on their board of directors, according to new regulations that went into effect last month.
