Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid, the UAE's finance minister, has passed away

Sheikh Hamdan, 75, was the brother of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and  Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. 

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the finance minister of the United Arab Emirates and the deputy ruler of Dubai, died on Wednesday. He had been unwell for several months.

Sheikh Hamdan, 75, was the brother of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai. "We belong to God, and to Him, we shall return," Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid said on the official Twitter account. My brother, my supporter, and my companion, may God have mercy on you.”

Sheikh Hamdan, the second son of the late ruler Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, was born on December 25, 1945. He started his formal education in Dubai, attended the Al-Ahlia school in Dubai for his early education and the Bell School of Languages in Cambridge for his post-secondary education.

In 1971, Sheikh Hamdan was appointed as the UAE's first Minister of Finance and Industry, a role he held till his demise. He was responsible for the creation of the country's fiscal policies and government expenditure.

He served as the chairman of many high-level government bodies that aided the UAE's economy and labor market. Dubai Municipality, Al Maktoum Base, Dubai Aluminum (Dubal), Dubai Natural Gas Company Limited (DUGAS), and the Dubai World Trade Center were among them.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid was the first person to earn three Royal British College certificates in 2006. He enjoyed hunting and dhow racing in addition to his love of horses.

Following the death of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared ten days of mourning in Dubai starting from 24th March.

From Thursday, March 24, all government agencies and institutions in the Emirate will be closed for three days. Starting today, all flags in Dubai will be flown at half-mast for ten days from March 24 onwards. Owing to the pandemic, prayers can only be offered by family members. After the Maghrib prayer today, the state's mosques will hold an absentee prayer for the late Sheikh Hamdan.
