Zainab Fasiki, Moroccan cartoonist and women's rights activist wrote a book on the #MeToo movement

Moroccan artist Zainab Fasiki combines art with a self-created #MeToo hashtag.

In response to a web series titled #TaAnaMeToo that portrays women's real-life ordeals, a dozen students and professionals have teamed up with Fasiki, who is a pioneer in Moroccan comics and illustration.

"We're here to reform the rape mentality, which says that the victim deserves the appropriate justice when the criminal is guilty," says Fasiki, 26, her outrage visible in her eyes.

She highlighted the harrowing testimony of a 22-year-old woman who was abused by her brother for many years, despite her parent’s ignorance. As part of the series — "Ta ana" means "Me Too" in Moroccan Arabic dialect.

Unlike the #MeToo movement as a whole, the Moroccan women who chose to share their experiences for the initiative tend to remain anonymous.

Rape victims in Morocco, according to series producer Youssef Ziraoui, face not only a sense of "shame" and the danger of being thrown out by their families but also the possibility of being accused of sex before marriage under Moroccan law if they go to the police.

The participants in the Casablanca workshop are brainstorming for innovative responses to some of the campaign's negative reactions.

As the community works on tablets or with paper and pencil, Fasiki says, "Choose a negative comment and react to it." Art is "a big instrument of overall transformation in society as a whole." According to Fasiki, she identifies herself as an "artivist" (an artist and activist). She further adds, "Images have a lot of influence, particularly on social media."
