According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, a cargo plane declared an emergency in the ocean off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii, early Friday morning, with two passengers on board.

The FAA claimed in a statement that "the pilots have reported engine difficulties and were trying to return to Honolulu but they were forced to land the aircraft in the sea."

"The US Coast Guard rescued two crew members, according to preliminary reports. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation."

According to Flightradar 24, the airplane took off from Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport at 1:33 a.m. The flight-tracking webpage reveals that immediately after takeoff, the jet — referred to as Transair flight 810 by the FAA statement — started heading right and then signaled that it was diverting to a nearby airfield, Kalaeloa Airport.

According to Petty Officer 3rd, Class Matthew West of the US Coast Guard District 14 Hawaii Pacific, the plane went down roughly at two nautical miles south of Kalaeloa.

Both members of the crew were taken to Queens Medical Center, as per West, who did not even know what their circumstances were.

Transair, according to its website, employs its Boeing 737 fleet to deliver air cargo and charter flights across Hawaii. Since 1982, the company has been in operation.

According to FAA records, the plane was built in 1975. Its most recent airworthiness certificate was granted in 2015, and that was due to expire in 2024.
