Germany defeated Portugal 4-2 in Group F of Euro 2020 on Saturday, restoring their chances of reaching the knockout stages and placing the reigning champions in jeopardy.

In Munich, Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal ahead, and also own goals from Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro gave Germany the edge before Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens scored in the second half to make it 4-1.

Diogo Jota equalized for Portugal, which is level on three points with Germany and one point behind leaders France.

During their last game, Portugal will play France, while Germany will face bottom-placed Hungary.

Following Cristiano Ronaldo's 107th international goal, which placed him two shies of Ali Daei's record, to give Portugal an early lead, the Germans stormed back with four consecutive goals.

German pressure resulted in its own goals by Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro, providing the hosts a 2-1 lead at the interval.

Germany's dominance was highlighted by a goal by Kai Havertz before left-back Robin Gosens finished up his man-of-the-match performance by heading in Germany's fourth goal, contributing to his two assists.

With 23 minutes remaining, Diogo Jota tapped in Ronaldo's hooked volley to render it 4-2 for Portugal.

Germany maintained its dominance over Portugal, whom it has now defeated five times in World Cup or European Championship finals since Euro 2000.

Germany produced a plethora of chances in comparison to Tuesday's 1-0 defeat by France, but Portugal appears to lack the poise that marked their 3-0 triumph over Hungary the day before.

The game got off to a frenzied start in the Bavarian capital's scorching heat.

After five minutes, VAR ruled that Serge Gnabry was offside as Gosens struck a stunning volley.

However, Germany's poor defence allowed Portugal to lead the way.

Bernardo Silva began a counter-attack with just Gosens and Havertz covering at a German corner, then picked out Jota in the area with a world-class ball.

With fewer than 15 minutes remaining, the Liverpool striker squared to Ronaldo, who rushed into the area and slotted the ball past Germany captain Manuel Neuer.

Ronaldo's opening goal against Germany brought his total to 12 goals in five European Championship finals.

However, two own goals in the first four minutes of the game swung the game around.

On 35 minutes, Havertz swiped another Gosens shot towards the net, with Dias making the last touch as the ball went past Rui Patricio.

The second goal came soon after, as Guerreiro diverted Kimmich's cross into his own net while attempting to prevent the ball from hitting the approaching German strikers.

Portugal equalized after Guerreiro's free-kick was deflected by Ronaldo and turned into it by Jota.

Germany came close to scoring a fifth goal late in the game when Havertz's substitute Leon Goretzka shot over after yet another storming onslaught by the hosts.

Portugal has not allowed four goals since losing 4-0 to Germany at the 2014 World Cup.
