The Queen Anne Stakes is won by Sheikh Hamdan's Palace Pier

On Tuesday, Palace Pier won the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, the day's highlight at Royal Ascot.

To make up for the lack of speed in the race, Frankie Dettori confidently rode the John Gosden-trained Palace Pier, and the pair surged away within the final furlong for a length and a half victory against Lope Y Fernandez, with Sir Busker back in third.

The son of Kingsman won the St James's Palace Stakes over a shorter trip at the Royal meeting a year ago, and he resurfaced to capture another lucrative trophy for owner Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.

This was the 74th Royal Ascot victory for the 50-year-old Italian great, whose first success at the meeting came in the same event in 1990 with Markofdistinction.

Dettori stated that he had missed the crowd in 2020 since the event was conducted within closed doors owing to Covid-19 restrictions, but and he had his audience this year.

“I needed valium this morning, I was that excited,” said Dettori, who blew kisses to the spectators, cupped his hands over his ears to absorb the ovation, and did his usual soaring dismount.

“Ascot was always a big part of my life. That is where it all began 31 years ago. I felt it was an illusion seeing that entire color in the stands (well-dressed fans).”

That was a historic triumph for Gosden and his son Thady, since it was their first Royal Ascot victory since becoming joint trainers this season.

“I've been second in this race thrice — it took Thady to bring me across the line,” said Gosden, who already won the Copper Horse Stakes with Amtiyaz.

Jim Bolger, a veteran trainer, stole the show on the racetrack with Poetic Flare's victory in the St James' Palace Stakes.

Poetic Flare cruised to victory in the main event that was seen by Prince Charles and his wife Camilla.

There has been no royal procession, and Queen Elizabeth II, a racing lover, watched from Windsor Castle, but she may come later in the week when several of her horses are scheduled to compete.

Bolger did not attend, but his family did, and his daughter, Una, welcomed Poetic Flare and his jockey, her 54-year-old husband Kevin Manning, in the winner's enclosure.

Una told ITV, "Dad had such trust in him (Poetic Flare)."

“I called him after the race and said, 'Well done,' and he responded, 'That was exactly what I have been expecting.'"

Poetic Flare was characterized by Manning as an "iron horse" in his sixth race since April, which included the English, Irish, and French 2000 Guineas. At Newmarket, he won the English 2000 Guineas.

Another racing legend's son became a Royal Ascot winner for the first time.

As Oxted won the Group One King's Stand Stakes, Cieren Fallon, son of retired former champion rider Kieren, handed trainer Roger Teal his first Royal Ascot victory.

“I never imagined I would have a sensation like this crossing the line, and I loved it,” said Fallon, whose father hasn’t ever won the race during his remarkable career.

“I phoned him before the race because he was on the golf course, and he offered me wonderful advice.”

Berkshire Shadow won the Coventry Stakes under star rider Oisin Murphy, another first-time victory for owner Paul Spickett.

“This is incredible. “I've wanted to own horses since I was 12 years old,” Spickett added. “Today is an important day. “I got him for my wife since she likes greys. We began betting at 22/1 (he won at 11/1) and will get a modest bottle of champagne later on today.”
