Sweden holds Spain to a scoreless draw in Seville

Princess Tarfa

Spain controlled the game but failed to score any of their attempts, resulting in a 0-0 tie with Sweden in Seville.

Sweden looked threatening on rare times and came close to breaking the stalemate toward the conclusion of the first half when Real Sociedad forward Isak Alexander's effort from within the box hit the post after rebounding off Spain defender Marcos Llorente in the front of the goal line.

Only a few minutes earlier, lvaro Morata had Spain's greatest chance, but his shot went beyond with goalkeeper Robin Olsen the only opponent to beat inside the box. In the 90th minute, Olsen also stopped a close-range header by replacing Gerard Moreno.

Sweden's other decent chance was squandered early in the second half when Marcus Berg misfired inside the box.

Slovakia beat Poland 2-1 in the other group match at St. Petersburg.

Spain's Euro 2020 matches would be played in Seville rather than Bilbao, the proposed host city, due to the high infection rate of the virus in the northern city, which then would prevent many supporters from attending games.

The match drew a small audience of 12,517 people to La Cartuja, where Spain would also play Poland on Saturday and Slovakia on June 23. La Cartuja will however host a quarterfinal match.

Sweden will play Slovakia in St. Petersburg on Friday.
