Illegal entries in Sharjah nature reserves, leads to arrest of 17 people

Princess Tarfa

Authorities in Sharjah have taken into custody 17 persons for illegally accessing the Emirate's natural reserves.

The arrest took place as part of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority's (EPAA) increased surveillance initiative near nature reserves.

Entering the nature reserves without even a valid permission from the EPAA is subject to punishment by a Dhs5,000 penalty.

The Sharjah Executive Council has enacted Resolution No.5 to combat vilification of biodiversity conservation initiatives in the emirate's reserves.

To respond to the threat of unlawful entry into nature areas, strict procedures have been put in place.

There seems to be a Dhs10,000 penalty for additional breaches in the natural reserves, such as hunting, transferring or killing wild or marine species in the nature reserves, or carrying out harmful operations.

Another breach is the practice of any acts or actions, whether by businesses or people, that might have an adverse effect on the environment of the natural reserves, which needs to carry a Dhs10,000 penalty.

“The judgment intends to conserve land and marine biological diversity and animals in natural reserves,” said Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority. We want to prohibit any type of action that just might adversely affect animals. There are nine different sorts of breaches, each with its own penalty.”
