The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that the UAE might be the proud host of the 2021 Twenty20 World Cup.
Many game-changing choices were made during an ICC session on Tuesday which will transform the game's environment in the future.
The international governing body gathered on Tuesday to draw out the ICC's future tournaments from 2024 through 2031.
The world's cricket governing body also declared the reinstatement of the canceled Champions Trophy and the increase of participating teams in world-class ICC competitions at a historic moment.
The decision to relocate the T20 World Cup appears to have been prompted by an unusual increase of coronavirus infections in India, though the ICC did not specify this as a cause.
“The ICC Board has recommended that management focus its planning process for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 on the tournament being played in the UAE, with the capability of integrating another Middle Eastern venue,” the ICC said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The final judgment is likely later this month.” “Regardless of whatever country hosts the premier event, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will remain the hosts,” the ICC said in a statement.
India, a cricketing powerhouse, demands additional time to assess the viability of organizing the tournament. The statement came after the BCCI chose to relocate the postponed-IPL to the UAE after it was suspended in the middle due to an outbreak of the virus in the bio-secure bubble, resulted in evacuation of international players. However, the BCCI cited the monsoon as the rationale for moving the IPL to the UAE.
The 2021 T20 World Cup had also been set to take place in India in October-November. However, a substantial increase of COVID-19 cases not only prompted the BCCI to reschedule the IPL but also threw a gloomy shadow over the cricket extravaganza's presentation in India later this year.
The West Indies currently hold the T20 World Cup title.
The IPL was called off in the middle of the tournament as the second wave reached India. India is still recovering from the disaster, which caused a statewide lockdown and threw life into turmoil, leaving many without basic medical care.
The ICC Board of Directors confirmed the calendar of ICC tournaments from 2024 to 2031, for both the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup being enhanced.
“In 2027 and 2031, the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will include 14 teams and 54 matches. The ICC Men's T20 World Cup will be increased to 20 nations, with 55 matches taking place in 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030, according to the ICC.
The participation of ten countries in the 50-over World Cup, won by presenters England in 2019, sparked criticism for impeding the game's global expansion.
However, no adjustments were done in preparation for the 50-over World Cup, which will be contested in India in 2023. Like its predecessor, it will involve just the top 10 teams.
In 2025 and 2029, an eight-team Champions Trophy will be held. The ICC World Test Championship Finals will be held in 2025, 2027, 2029, and 2031.
The Champions trophy, which was first awarded in 1998, was discontinued in 2017 following a controversy about its function. Pakistan had won the previous edition in England before the tournament was dropped from the ICC schedule.
“The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup format would consist of two groups of seven players each, with both the top three from each group going to a Super Six stage, followed by semi-finals and the final.
“It's the same structure used in the 2003 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The ICC Men's T20 World Cup structure will comprises of 4 groups of five, with the top two from each group progressing to a Super Eights stage, followed by knockout rounds of semi-finals and a final,” the ICC explained.
"The Champions Trophy would be held in the same manner as previous editions, with two groups of four, semi-finals, and the final," the governing body announced.
The ICC Women's event calendar has been established, with the development of both the Cricket World Cup and the T20 World Cup part of the ICC's long-term commitment to develop the women's game.
“Getting the ICC event schedule approved through to 2031 is a big step forward for cricket and will serve as the foundation of our growth plan during the next decade,” said ICC Acting Chief Executive Geoff Allardice.
“The revamped way to choosing hosts for our tournaments will provide us with far more freedom to expand the game and attract new fans,” he continued.
“Since there is a limited pool of nations with the infrastructure required to host our senior Men's tournaments, the selection procedure is narrower.
Several of our Members indicated interest in organizing Women's and U19 tournaments, presenting us with an excellent chance to arrange tournaments in established and developing cricket nations,” he explained.
