Unknown attackers conducted attacks on two Myanmar air bases on Thursday, with explosions reported at one and rocket fire shown at the other, according to media and an eyewitness.

According to preliminary sources, Myanmar government forces conducted air raids on ethnic minority guerrillas in two parts of the country on Wednesday.

The attacks occur after three months of unrest in Myanmar, which began with a military coup on February 1. There was no assertion of blame, nor was there any evidence of injuries in the attacks.

Fighting has raged continuously in northern Myanmar, in territories dominated by the Kachin Independence Organization, which represents the Kachin minority, and in the east by the Karen National Union, which represents the Karen.

According to Reuters, a military spokesperson did not return calls for information.

Both groups also formed alliances with the common campaign resisting the military junta that confiscated power in the country in February after deposing Aung San Suu Kyi's elected government.

The first strike occurred in the early hours of Thursday at an airbase in the central town of Magway, according to a Facebook post by the Delta News Agency.

Following the bombings, security checks on roads outside the base were increased, according to the news website.

Afterward, five rockets were shot at one of the country's largest air bases, at Meiktila, northeast of Magway, according to Than Win Hlaing, a reporter who was near the site at the time.

The assault on Bago was the third of the last week comprising a heavy use of force to attempt to smash the junta's steadfast opposition.

He also shared a video clip of what may have been a missile passing overhead, followed by an explosion. The clip could not be verified by Reuters.

Pro-democracy demonstrations have shaken cities and towns since the ouster of an elected government headed by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, and the military has retaliated with deadly force, killing 756 civilians, according to an advocacy group. Reuters has been unable to validate the death toll.

Fighting has also erupted between both the military and ethnic minority rebels following the uprising with the military conducting several air raids in borderlands to the north and east.

Although the military has been fighting militants in border regions for ages, assaults on high-profile military installations in central areas have been unusual.
