UAE: Unit 2 Operating License Has Been Obtained By Barakah Nuclear Power Plant

FANR (The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation) is the independent nuclear regulator of UAE issued Unit 2 operating license of Barakah Nuclear Power Plant for Nawah (Nawah Energy Company) on Tuesday.

This entity is the subsidiary of ENEC (Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation) which is entitled for operating the plant located in Abu Dhabi.

The operating license is issued for 60 years states Nawah for the operation of the plant’s Unit 2 said by Hamad Al Kaabi, Deputy Chairman of FANR and UAE Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the press conference.

He goes on adding that decision of issuing of the operating license has been taken after the process of exhaustive review with the inclusion of rigorous inspection and application assessment.

“It is the outcome of intensive effort and collaboration between international and national stakeholders like Republic of Korea and IAEA including other international regulatory bodies,” he revealed.

He also said that the Unit 1 commercial operation will be announced in a short span of time.

Currently, 1,400 MW (megawatt) of electricity has been generated by Unit 1 from only one connected generator from UAE grid.

This plant will be the largest source of clean baseload electrical power in this Gulf country with the capacity of supplying uninterrupted electricity in the most sustainable manner.
