The World Green Economy Summit (WGES) is a strategic forum that promotes worldwide collaboration in addressing global issues, promoting sustainable development, and investing in the green economy.

Since its debut in 2014, the summit has made significant progress and achieved numerous goals, owing in large part to greater collaboration between public and private sector decision-makers. WGES concludes every year by publishing the Dubai Declaration, which incorporates the suggestions of the participants, the summit conclusions, and its milestones and activities.

The 7th WGES would be held on October 6th and 7th, 2021 at Expo 2020 Dubai, with the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.' Because it is being hosted in conjunction with Expo 2020 Dubai, this WGES is likely to be on a larger scale. This contributes to the summit's success in cementing Dubai's status as a worldwide hub for the green economy.

“The WGES aims are consistent with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's directions to strike the right balance between economic growth and environmental stability. The conference also lends assistance to the UAE's attempts to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, the Emirates Green Agenda 2030, and the Dubai Energy Strategy 2050. Several significant efforts in the UAE have hastened the transition to a green economy. “The UAE has initiated several significant efforts to speed up the propeller of green economic transformation,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the DSCE and Chairman of the WGES.

“Transformational initiatives like solar power plant construction, the use of eco-friendly EV vehicles, and the development of sustainable, low-carbon urban areas complement the smart leadership approach to ensure a sustainable future for important industries in the UAE. Dubai had already made significant progress toward sustainable development. It has pioneered projects in renewable energy sources, such as the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world's biggest single-site solar park built on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. It is expected to have a capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030. This strengthens the UAE and Dubai's leadership as a successful example for global sustainability,” Al Tayer remarked.

The sixth World Green Economic Summit (WGES) in 2019 focused on three primary pillars: sustainable development, international collaboration toward a green economy system, and also the adoption of new green solutions. The meeting was attended by presidents, world leaders, and influencers.

It drew over 4,000 participants, experts, and thought leaders from diverse disciplines of the green economy and sustainable growth including CEOs, partners, financial institutions, and global market representatives from 78 countries. 14 seminars and discussion meetings were led by 60 speakers.

The conference focused on connecting energy policy with the UN SDGs, emphasizing the substantial amount of effort necessary to establish a sustainable tomorrow.  Participants discussed effective sustainability techniques, processes, and guidelines, and their replication and scaling possibilities. It also emphasized the role of women in attaining a green economy through innovative ideas in creativity, collaboration, openness, environmental management, and social solidarity, all of which are critical for environmental sustainability and growth. This iteration of the summit focused on the difficulties and possibilities that women face in the field of sustainability, featuring diverse women working in fields such as energy, water, finance, and development.

The conference addressed the private sector's durability, green banking and investment, and the problems and solutions for the green economy and sustainable farming. It also underlined the country's willingness to assist the transition to a green economy. This was accomplished via the organization of beneficial meetings that gathered up global environmentalists, technicians, and business leaders to debate that how public and private sectors could optimize innovation to expedite the transition to a green economy.

The conference saw the formation of the Dubai Sustainable Financial Working Group, which brings together the local finance sector's important environmental projects in local and regional markets. It also emphasized the significance of international collaboration in resolving global issues and fostering global sustainable development.

The development of the Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) for the Middle East and North Africa, and the staging of Regional Ministerial Conferences by the WGEO to strengthen global cooperation, is evidence of global efforts to move toward a more sustainable tomorrow.
