The 12th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship (ADWPJJC) saw another day of world-class action as the ‘Road to Glory' came to a dramatic end at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena in the presence of several VIPs, including Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, minister of peace and harmony.

Brazil topped the country rankings with 35 medals, including 16 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze, as brown and black belt practitioners from around the world took to the mats in the birthplace of jiu-jitsu. Beatriz Mesquita, Bianca Basilio, Israel Almeida, Isaque Braz, and Gabrieli Pessanha were among the Brazilians who sparkled. The athletes were quick to thank the organizers of the ADWPJJC, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, for providing them with a healthy place to play during the pandemic.

Mesquita put on a strong show to win her sixth adult title, winning in under a minute with an armbar on opponent Lari Paes.

Mesquita said after her win, “Today's triumph is one of the most significant in my career, as I have been preparing and competing for this moment for a long time. Competing in a global championship against the best in the world in such unprecedented circumstances in a safe environment is a true privilege, and competing in a global championship against the best in the world in such unprecedented circumstances in a safe environment is a true privilege. I'd like to thank the ADPWJJC organizers for organizing such a great international championship in these trying times."

Diego Batista, a compatriot, won gold in the 62kg black belt division at the ADWPJJC with a 4-3 win over Hiago George.

“Seizing the gold in my black belt debut at ADWJJC feels incredible,” Batista, who earned gold in the brown belt 69kg division at the 11th ADWPJJC, said. The ADWPJJC organizing committee did an outstanding job of allowing jiu-jitsu athletes to participate and practice the sport they enjoy in a healthy environment.”

Gabrieli Passenha, the Brazilian "Queen of the Mats," won gold in the women's 95 kg brown-black belt division after a thrilling fight with Yara Soares. Brazilian competitors did not get it all their way, as Adam Wardzinksi of Poland won his first gold medal in the 94kg black belt class, defeating Renato Cardoso of Brazil 6-4.

“It feels fantastic to win my first gold medal at ADWPJJC after two years of silver. This is one of my lifelong dreams coming true, and I can't wait to defend my title in the 13th edition. I was very familiar with my opponent. I knew he'd be difficult and we both had our strategic moves, but in the end, I came out on top. The 12th edition of the championship provides hope for the championship's continuation in these difficult times for us athletes who live for this sport.” Wardzinksi said.
