Eden Hazard's 94th-minute equalizer reclaimed Real Madrid's 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Sunday when an unprecedented penalty call shifted La Liga's title chase back to Atletico Madrid's favor.
Midway into the second half, Marco Asensio equalized for Zinedine Zidane's hand, and they felt they had a penalty because Karim Benzema was taken down after circling Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bono.
Even so, VAR caused referee Juan Martinez Munuera to review an Eder Militao handball a few seconds earlier, resulting in a big decision that saw Madrid's penalty canceled and a spot-kick given to Sevilla afterward.
Ivan Rakitic scored, and although Real Madrid came back in injury time, with Toni Kroos' shot misdirecting in off Eden Hazard's foot, the draw gives Atletico the lead at the end of yet another exciting weekend in the Spanish title chase.
“They ought to clarify the precise rules of the hands to me,” Zidane said later.
“But first we must focus on the next game. It is no longer up to us, so we will fight to the bitter end, till the death.”
After Barcelona and Atletico Madrid battled out a goalless draw at Camp Nou on Saturday, the second installment of La Liga's blockbuster weekend also ended in a tie, ensuring the top spot remains intact with three games left.
Atletico Madrid is two points ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona, and the crown is very much in their possession.
A Sevilla win would have earned them a fighting chance, but they are still six points behind and out of the race.
“We are sad, but we will not give up,” Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui said.
With a better head-to-head history than Barcelona, a draw might also be definitive, when they only need to conquer one team now rather than two.
“It's unfortunate, but we're all alive,” Luka Modric said. “We've noticed that everybody is losing points, so you'll have to believe.”
Hazard was forced to leave Real Madrid's bench after his controversial response to Chelsea's Champions League loss, and although the compensator was ultimately attributed to him, there was no sense of salvation considering how little the Belgian thought about it.
In the first ten minutes, Sevilla had 75% of the ball, but it looked like much more, with Madrid chasing shadows and unable to avoid their half.
They netted on their first attack, with Benzema rising above Jules Kounde to go in, only to see the shot ruled out due to Alvaro Odriozola being offside in the build-up.
Madrid seemed resentful, with the normally consistent Modric making clumsy passes and Kroos and Casemiro unable to make an impact.
Sevilla took a lead in the 22nd minute, with a quick free-kick down the right raising the angle before Rakitic's cool header down handed Fernando Reges the chance. Before slotting in, he dummied through the diving Casemiro.
Madrid made an early comeback after halftime. After a clever short corner, Vinicius Junior pushed into the outside of the goal before Modric was substituted by Asensio, who scored 65 seconds later.
Joan Jordan of Sevilla was stuck in midfield, and Benzema sped away. Asensio appeared to have overrun the ball, but it was recovered by Kroos, who swept the first time into the goal.
Madrid had the advantage, and they figured they also had penalty even before pendulum flew back and forth in a matter of seconds.
Sevilla's corner has been cleared, and Benzema was sent through one-on-one, circling Bono and falling for what seemed to be an apparent spot-kick.
Instead, Martinez was guided to the monitor, where he saw Militao had hoisted an arm through the ball before Sevilla's corner was removed.
Both benches rendered their intentions clear, although the majority of the voices from the stand in front of Martinez, many from Madrid, claimed the ball had hit Militao's back.
Martinez, however, overturned Madrid's penalty and gave one to Sevilla, with Rakitic standing up and slotting into the corner.
Hazard appeared, and the action had not yet concluded. In the 94th minute, Kroos snuck forward and fired a shot that ricocheted off Hazard's foot and in.
Madrid also had two minutes to pick a winner, and Casemiro's shot curled agonizingly wide.
