In an Indian Premier League match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here on Tuesday, Mumbai Indians (MI) rallied to win by ten runs as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batsmen gave away their wickets to make a mess of a modest 152-run target. Despite getting off to a flying start, KKR batsmen lost credibility after Andre Russell's five-wicket haul in two overs (5/15) helped KKR bowl out a power-packed MI for 152 in 20 overs.
KKR were 104/2 at one point, requiring only 49 runs off 43 balls for a win that appeared to be a foregone conclusion. Nitish Rana's solid half-century (57 off 47), his second consecutive fifty in this IPL, had given KKR a perfect start. The backs of MI bowlers were against the wall after his 72-run opening stand with Shubman Gill (33).
Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar enticed the top four KKR batsmen — Rana, Gill, Rahul Tripathi, and skipper Eoin Morgan — into making errors that cost them their wickets. After 15 overs, Chahar's four-wicket haul (4/27) had KKR at 122/4. KKR had the game in their hands, requiring 31 from 30 balls. Shakib Al Hasan, on the other hand, wasted his wicket by being trapped in deep by Krunal Pandya.
MI bowlers bowled so close that neither Russell nor Dinesh Karthik was able to free their bodies. KKR required 15 runs off the final over, which was too much for Trent Boult, who took two wickets in his final over. Earlier, despite losing an early wicket and a less effective power-play point, Mumbai squandered a good start provided by Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma.
After the spinners, who bowled five of the six power-play overs, had curtailed MI, Yadav (56 off 36 balls) decided to take on the KKR attack and began playing his shots. He smashed two sixes and seven fours in Harbhajan Singh's second over to help MI to a solid number.
However, his termination in the 11th over by Shakib Al Hasan, when MI was moving at 86/1, set off a collapse. MI quickly lost Ishan Kishan, who was bowled by Pat Cummins in the 12th over, and skipper Rohit Sharma, who struggled to get started against the spinners, was discarded a few overs later.
Rohit made 43 off 32 balls as part of a 76-run second-wicket partnership with Yadav.
The famed Michigan middle and lower-order batting, which boasts a slew of hard-hitting players, was unable to get going. MI lost the wickets of Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard in the span of six balls after Rohit was dismissed. After the removal of South African Marco Jansen, MI was reduced to 126/7 after 18 overs.
Russell, a medium-pacer, hadn't bowled until the 17th over. But in his first over, the 18th of the innings, he dismissed Kieron Pollard (5) and Marco Jansen (0), and in the final over of the match, he dismissed Krunal Pandya (15), Jasprit Bumrah (0), and Rahul Chahar (8) for 5/15.
In the meantime, England's Ben Stokes has also been ruled out from the Indian Premier League after fracturing his finger in the Rajasthan Royals' first game, the team announced Tuesday.
On Monday, when fielding against Punjab Kings in Mumbai, the all-rounder fractured his finger. In his team's failed run chase, he finally opened the innings but was out for a third ball duck.
“All-rounder Ben Stokes of the Rajasthan Royals hurt a finger on his left hand when fielding during the team's match against Punjab Kings on 12 April 2021 in Mumbai. Following further investigation, it was discovered that he had a fractured finger, which will sadly keep him out from the rest of the Indian Premier League season in 2021.” the Royals explained.
While taking a catch to eliminate Punjab batsman Chris Gayle, Stokes fractured his finger and had to leave the field to receive treatment. He only bowled one over when his finger was broken, giving up 12 runs. When Stokes came back to bat, Mohammed Shami caught and bowled him for naught.
“Everyone at Rajasthan Royals admires Ben for being such a great asset and a prominent member of the Royals family, both on and off the field,” the team said.
“We are thrilled that Ben would like to remain with the team and provide his invaluable assistance and insights off the field. We'll be looking at possible replacements for the rest of the season,” the team says.
Rajasthan will play Delhi Capitals in Mumbai on Thursday, led by India's Sanju Samson.
“We are conscious of Stokes' injury. He will be tested on the nature of the severity of the injury. We'll confirm the next moves at that moment,” an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman said.
