After renovation, Najran’s ancient Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque reopens for prayer

Princess Tarfa

The ancient Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque has now been rebuilt as part of the Prince Muhammad Bin Salman Initiative for Historical Mosque Renovation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which involves the restoration and rehabilitation of 30 mosques across ten areas.

This is one of the oldest buildings in the old village and is situated about 3 kilometers west of Thar and approximately 120 kilometers northeast of Najran.

The mosque has historical significance because it is the oldest mosque in the old Thar region and the only mosque in the district where locals and people from nearby villages used to gather for Friday prayers.

But apart from being a place of worship, the mosque is regarded as a cultural and scientific landmark for the people of the city, where numerous sermons and lectures were held.

The mosque played an important social part, as people gathered there to discuss their everyday lives and resolve conflicts and fights.  In addition, many people used to learn to write and read in the mosque.

Before the reconstruction process, the mosque comprised of a room for worship, an outside garden, a shelter, and a bathroom on a total surface area of about 130 square meters, with the potential to host around 57 worshipers. It was composed of bricks, with a roof consisting of wooden squares capped by wooden panels protected by a concrete base.

The historical Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Mosque, that has been restored, contains a prayer building, a retreat, Al-Sarha, a prayer chamber for women, toilets, and places of ablution for men and women, and can host up to 118 devotees.
