ASIR ART IS A STRONG FORCE

Princess Tarfa

Several imaginative Saudi women in the southern region of Asir are using Al-Qatt Al-Asir, the region's female traditional interior wall design that has been practiced for decades and decades, by generations. This ancient female art form, which entails decorating the internal walls of houses, particularly areas for welcoming visitors, with Al-Qatt, is regarded as a key component of the Asir region's heritage.

On Al-Qatt Al-Asir, there are a host of museums and private art centers owned by these artistic women. The Ministry of Tourism arranged advanced training programs in this artistic medium especially for women, which assisted in the promotion of this ancient art in the new generation as well. Following that, strong relationships were established with international agencies and local arts organisation to provide affordable courses for young women who are interested to learn this art form in this area.

In particular, the base of Al-Qatt Al-Asir is made of white gypsum with iconographic geometric designs that run the length of the walls. It is done by the Asiri women on a variety of surfaces. It includes clothes, shoes, and furniture. This art specifically encourages human connection and cooperation within the group, and also helps to develop a healing impact on its practitioners.
