Transport of 22 of Egypt's valued royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum was commemorated with a parade

Egypt staged a grand parade to mark the transport of 22 royal mummies from Cairo to their new home at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization.

The multimillion-dollar spectacle of 18 kings and four queens making the 7-kilometer (four-mile) journey from the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo's Tahrir Square to their new resting place drew large crowds on Saturday evening.

The majority of the 22 royals in the convoy were from the New Kingdom. Authorities closed roads along the river Nile for the elaborate ceremony, which aims to pique interest in Egypt's large antiquities collections at a time when tourism is nearly halted due to COVID-19-related restrictions.

Cannons fired a 21-gun salute as the royal mummies arrived at the museum, which was formally opened on Saturday.

As the mummies moved past on vehicles adorned with golden pharaonic motifs, President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi stood at the museum's entrance to warmly welcome them.

At the ceremony, the heads of the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO and the World Tourism Organization were also present.

According to Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass, each mummy was put in a special capsule filled with nitrogen to ensure its safety so that they don’t get ruined while transporting. They were carefully transported in vehicles that were designed to cradle and support them.

Fustat, is the new museum's location. It was Egypt's capital after the Arab conquest under the Umayyad dynasty.
