Happiness for all embedded in UAE culture

Princess Tarfa

According to an English newspaper, the UAE checks all the boxes in happiness on today's International Day of Happiness. There are many ways to measure satisfaction in life. Some people are happy if they obtain money to cover household expenses. Some people are happy to be with their parents or elders. Some children are happier with nothing more than an ice cream cone. The editorial published in the English newspaper, Gulf Today, on Sunday made the case.

During the pandemic crisis, the government's concern for the community's happiness was not restricted to economic, health, and service aspects. It also included psychosocial support through campaigns and services. "The role of governments is to build the atmosphere in which people can achieve their happiness," says His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of Dubai.

To demonstrate UAE's commitment to raising the standard for happiness, the National Programme for Happiness and Wellbeing initiated the "Be Well" campaign in May last year, coinciding with International Workers Day, a community project aimed at fostering worker health and safety and endorsing national initiatives to combat the pandemic.

The 'Be Well' box for staff was the highlight of the campaign. The authorities have stepped up to evaluate the situation and provide assistance with this package, by being aware of their financial situation and the difficulties they may face in buying medical products to fight against the virus. Face masks, gloves, sanitizers, and food products are among the 44 important prevention and security items included in the "Be Well" box. The fact that a new SIM card is included is also noteworthy, according to the daily.

The government is also worried about the psychological effects of the pandemic on its people. Many have lost their loved ones and need emotional support and counseling. According to the editorial, the Mental Support Line is an awareness of the government's directives and actions in coping with the virus's effects by concentrating on protecting and supporting citizens' and residents' physical, social, and mental wellbeing.

The fact that the country has set a global precedent by naming a Minister for Happiness demonstrates how seriously it takes matters concerning the happiness of its people. The country's first Minister of State for Happiness and Health is Ohoud Bint Khalfan Al Roumi.

On a global scale, the UAE's medical and humanitarian assistance reaches every corner of the globe. It is the most visible safety valve for highly vulnerable and poor individuals. According to the newspaper, the UAE has retained its top spot among Arab countries for the sixth year in a row, according to the World Happiness Report 2020.

Taking heed of the basic requirements of its citizens, Sheikh Zayed, Housing Program's Board of Directors approved the names of 500 people eligible for housing assistance worth Dhs486 million, last year in May.

According to a study released in July 2020, the UAE government's efforts to provide financial assistance and other social benefits to people grew in 2019. The increase in aid in 2019, which reached Dhs7.46 billion, exemplified these efforts.

"The most important thing is to live your life happily. It is all that matters," the editorial concluded, quoting the well-known actress Audrey Hepburn.
