Hijab headbangers in Indonesia exchange village life for metal heaven

Princess Tarfa

Some of rock music's top artists are admirers of Indonesia's hijab-wearing, headbanging VOB, but the all-female heavy metal band encountered a tougher challenge in winning over their parents.

After establishing VOB as a young teen in 2014, the small trio behind Voice of Baceprot ("Noisy Voice" in English) spent several years polishing their abilities at music festivals.

It was a long journey from their hometown in West Java province, where they grew up, overcoming hostility from neighbors and family members to achieve their dream.

If the three ladies had accepted societal conventions, they would also have to marry immediately after high school.

The trio's tenacity ultimately won over their skeptic parents, and they relocated to the Indonesian capital Jakarta this year to develop their skills.

'Tough ladies,' they exclaim:

The band's migration to the major metropolis comes after the release of their successful 2018 track "School Revolution," which satirized Indonesia's rigid education system.

Most of their recent material has centered on women's roles and environmental problems.

According to music researcher Yuka Dian Narendra, VOB's criticism of conservative social values resonates across boundaries and could bring them a larger worldwide following.

VOB originally gained worldwide notoriety after Internet recordings of them blasting out song versions drew the attention of Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea, and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello.

Since the epidemic closed down most cross-border travel, the band has performed many online performances, such as the WOW UK Festival in England and the Global Just Recovery Gathering.

They're expecting that their hard-driving melodies will gain them a slot at top-tier US music event Coachella one day, and the opportunity to collaborate with heroes System of a Down.

Likewise, VOB said they'll continue to draw motivation from the ladies in their community, where many undertake back-breaking agricultural work.
