In a display of skill, Spain's chocolatiers recreate Pablo Picasso's masterpiece 'Guernica'

To highlight their talents and honor their cultural heritage, a group of chocolatiers in Spain's Basque Country are making a version of "Guernica," Pablo Picasso's masterpiece depicting the bombing of a small Basque town in the year 1937.

Guernica is one of the world's most popular works, was Picasso's homage to the bombing of fascist General Francisco Franco's forces by Nazi Germany and fascist Italy during the Spanish Civil War.

The massive cubist artwork, which stands in the Madrid's Reina Sofia art gallery, portrays a harrowing black and white scene filled with tortured human and animal characters.

Many Basque people are associated with the bombing and the Picasso's visceral artistic reaction with their cultural identity. To commemorate the 85th anniversary of the attack, a group of around 40 chocolatiers from a local organization named Euskal Gozogileak have been working together for a long time to create an illustration of Guernica made out of multicolored chocolate.

Owing to the large scale of the mural, which is almost 3.5 meters high and 8 meters tall, the project is great example of a technological challenge. The chocolatiers, who have been working inside an industrial kitchen in the tiny town of Lezo, have taken on the challenge by creating 14 individual chocolate bricks.

The finished product will be displayed in multiple places, including Guernica. In addition to taking part in such a significant cultural gathering, the chocolatiers wished to attract the attention of the important standard of craftsmanship, required in their occupation.
