30 to 40 countries are unable to provide 2nd Covid shots: WHO

According to World Health Organization (WHO) authorities, 30 to 40 nations are unable to administer second doses of a Covid-19 vaccine, particularly those anticipating AstraZeneca vaccines.

"We currently have a large number of nations who have had to postpone the distribution of their second doses of vaccination," Bruce Aylward, Senior Advisor to the WHO Director-General on Organizational Change, said on Friday, according to Xinhua.

Many nations who were anticipating AstraZeneca vaccines from the Serum Institute of India, which were to be given under the WHO-led COVAX initiative, had their supply cut as the manufacturer had to take priority in India's pandemic scenario in April 2021.

As per Aylward, countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East, and also some of India's neighboring countries like Nepal and Sri Lanka, are significantly impacted.

According to Katherine O'Brien, WHO Director of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines, and Biologicals, the majority of these nations "are at the ultimate conclusion of the vaccine supplies they have."

She responded by saying that nations with "poor" vaccination programs face a lack of supply, which may lead to a loss of faith among populations.

According to the WHO, as of June 18, a total of 2,378,482,776 vaccine doses have been distributed across countries throughout the globe.
