Britney Spears, a pop artist from the United States, spoke publicly against her conservatorship in a court hearing, claiming she intended to "sue" her "family" for how she had been handled. Spears told the judge on Wednesday that she chooses to end the "abusive" case that has left her to feel demoralized and imprisoned after 13 years of silence in the conservatorship that dominates her life and money.
"I informed the entire world I'm fine and happy - it's a lie," she admitted. "I'm not happy," the popular singer added. I'm having trouble sleeping. I'm insanely furious, and I'm depressed."
Spears, addressing in open court for the first time in the case, criticized her father and those in the authority of the conservatorship, which she claims has forced her to use birth control and take other medicines against her will, and prohibited her from getting married or having another child. "This conservatorship has been doing me far more damage than good Spears, 39, said. I'm entitled to a life."
She talked quickly and profanely throughout the written address, which stretched more than 20 minutes, as her parents, admirers, and media listened to an audio webcast. All the information revealed by Spears has been closely guarded by the court for years.
"I want to terminate this conservatorship without being assessed," Spears told Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny. Penny praised the singer for her "courageous" comments but made no decisions. A lengthy legal procedure is expected before a decision on dissolving the conservatorship is reached.
I WISH TO MARRY
Spears stated that she wishes to marry her lover Sam Asghari and have a baby with him, but she is not even permitted to drive with him. "All I want is to control my money, for everything to be over, and for my guy to be allowed to drive me in his (expletive) vehicle," Spears explained. "I genuinely think that this conservatorship is oppressive," Spears remarked, "I want my life back."
Spears yelled down an attorney for her co-conservator who claimed the session and transcript must be kept confidential if private medical information was to be exposed. She said her remarks should be made public.
"They've done a fantastic job of exploiting my life," Spears explained, "so I feel like it should be an open court hearing and they should listen to and hear what I'm about to say."
She further said that she was compelled to take lithium, which made her feel "drunk," when preparations for a Vegas residency in 2019 fell through, so the residency was ultimately canceled. She claimed that all she had accomplished was object to one aspect of the show's choreography.
PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS
“I'm not here to be anyone's servant,” Spears stated. I'm not afraid to refuse a dancing move.” "Not only did my family not do anything, but my father was all with it,” Spears explained. She blamed her father for enjoying his control over her, which he demonstrated when she failed a series of psychiatric tests and was forced to join a mental institution in 2019.
"I wept for an hour on the phone, and he enjoyed every minute of it," Spears explained. ”The dominance he had over someone as powerful as me, as often as he enjoyed the ability to harm his daughter 100,000 %"
Spears claimed she felt compelled to perform the Las Vegas residency on the heels of a tour, and when it was canceled, it seemed like a huge weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She hasn't performed or recorded anything since. Spears also claimed that multiple nurses were constantly watching her every move, not even allowing her to change her garments in private.
After meeting with Spears' father, James Spears, during a recess, Vivian Thoreen, attorney for Spears, delivered a brief statement on his account. "He is sorry to see his daughter in such distress,” Thoreen added. "Mr. Spears adores his daughter and misses her terribly.”
James Spears is a co-conservator of his daughter's money and has authority over her life decisions for the majority of the conservatorship. He is presently co-conservator of her finances.
Britney Spears said that her years-long public quiet gave the false impression that she approved of her situation. “I lied and told the entire world, 'I'm Fine,” she explained. "I've been in denial and shock. I've been traumatized.”
THE #FREEBRITNEY MOVEMENT
Before the hearing, more than 100 supporters of the so-called #FreeBritney campaign assembled outside the courthouse, waving placards that read "Free Britney immediately!" and "Get out of Britney's life!"
Fan Marissa Cooper was present in the courtroom and wept and clapped intermittently during the speech. "It was crazy," Cooper said outside the courtroom. "Everyone who has been monitoring this has been branded insane and conspiracy theorists since the start, so it just feels nice to hear it from her."
Spears stated that she did not feel heard in any of her previous court hearings, which were all closed to the public. Samuel Ingham III, her court-appointed attorney, stated that he made no effort to "control, censor, or alter" his client's statements. He stated that Spears has not formally requested that he submit a petition to terminate the conservatorship.
Spears stated that she had conducted research that indicated her conservatorship could be terminated without additional assessment. However, under California law, she will be required to establish her competence to control her affairs, and a detailed investigation and examination would be needed before it could be ended.
In 2008, she was placed into conservatorship due to a mental health crisis. She has attributed its inception with sparing her from financial disaster and retaining her as a top-tier pop star.
Her father and his attorneys have stressed that she and her inheritance, which is estimated to be worth more than $50 million according to court documents, still are subject to fraud and manipulation. According to the law, Spears will have to show her competence until the lawsuit could be dismissed.
Many people were outraged by Britney Spears' revelations, including her ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake. “What is happening to her is inappropriate,” Timberlake tweeted. "No woman ever should be denied the authority to make choices about her own body.”
