As per experts, coronavirus, like HIV and hepatitis, cannot infect a newborn infant from the mother

Covid-19, like HIV and hepatitis, cannot be transmitted to newborn infants even if the mother tested positive for the fatal virus, according to physicians and specialists, since about 250 nCoV positive mothers were found to have delivered healthy infants in Tripura.

Tapan Majumder, head of the Microbiology department at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), said it is a very positive development that no instance of Covid-19 being transmitted to a newborn child from the mother has been discovered in India even though the coronavirus disease is transmissible.

Over the last year, around 250 Covid-19 positive pregnant women have given birth to healthy infants at the AGMC, Tripura's primary Covid medical college and hospital, throughout the two pandemic phases.

He told IANS that all pregnant women are required to undergo Covid testing before admission and that if someone is discovered to have a positive case, proper health practices are followed.

Unlike in the first wave, children under the age of 15 are being tested for Covid-19 in decent numbers during the second wave in Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Assam, leading the governments of these states to form panels of pediatric doctors.

A count of 31 minor girls and eight caregivers at two orphanage homes in Tripura recently tested positive for Covid-19, with the majority of them having recovered from the infectious condition.

Because the pattern and degree of the second wave of Covid-19 vary, physician Pradip Bhowmik has proposed organizing study groups to do in-depth research on the condition.

Contrary to the first wave, the coronavirus is infecting a substantial number of young individuals and children. "The recovery rate in the second wave is quite sluggish, and the fatality rate is greater," Bhowmik told IANS.

According to him, Indian strains of the virus are far more hazardous than the UK and Brazilian forms. Bhowmik, an expert in Hepatitis illness who has worked on the illness in the northeastern regions and Bangladesh, stated that tribals' immunity is always greater genetically, but they're still susceptible to Covid-19, demanding further research.

Tribals account for around 29% of the 45.58 million people in the eight northeastern states, including Sikkim.
